Brainstormers
My fellow AAC Resident Danielle Mysliwiec is a member of the art collective Brainstormers who investigate topics ranging from power structures in the art world to gender inequity in contemporary museum and gallery exhibitions. They currently have a show up at the Mabel Smith Douglass Library Galleries @ Rutgers until Dec. 9th entitled Real Time, a site-specific installation that focuses on issues connected to the realities of being a visual artist in the contemporary art world ie. the romantic perception vs. the reality of being a working artist. Check it out if you are in the area.

the kids are alright
Not too long ago, I received a great email from Don Masse who teaches art at Zamorano Fine Arts Academy in San Diego, CA. He had seen some of my very old mixed media work and created a project for his students based on the idea of visual unity and variety.
Not only were several classes from different grades able to participate but they used a lot of the scrap paper left over from previous projects which proves one of my beliefs that you can make art from pretty much anything. Nice work!
You can check it all out here at the school's blog, shine brite zamorano.
Shortly after that, I found out that a charter school in Boston did a similar project inspired by my work and that of Kandinsky. Talk about being in good company. Here's a few of their images.
I think it's great that there are places for kids that still value the arts. It's been proven that children who are exposed to visual art, music, theater, and literature do better in their other subjects in the long run than kids who don't get those opportunities. Sure, they aren't all going to grow up and be the next Ernest Hemingway or Meryl Streep or Louis Armstrong or Will Cotton or Eva Hesse (I could go on and on but you get it). However, having experiences like this simply makes for a better understanding and appreciation for the world you are in. Nice work, kids... keep exploring and a big thanks to their teachers!

Winner takes it all
You may recall a few posts ago where I mentioned my sister, mom, and niece would be on the Sept. 27th episode of The Price is Right. They attended the taping back in June and managed to keep quiet about what happened. I assumed, from the encouragement to watch, that one of them got to Contestant's Row. Well... my sister got up on stage, proceeded to win her prize handily, won the top showcase spot at the wheel, and then won her showcase! All in all, she won over 47K worth of stuff (a Ford Escape SUV, a trip to Hawaii, a trip to Colorado, some hyper enclosed shower/tub/tv/dvr/phone/fridge thing, and a vanity). As Drew Carry told her, "It's surreal isn't it". Also, the models are huge compared to my family. I had no idea they were that tall. Can't wait to see the new car and crazy shower assembly at Thanksgiving.
