Sadly, it wasn't that long ago that there would be a sign above the fountain deeming it a "whites only" or "colored only" fountain. You'd think a country founded on the basis of freedom and liberty for "everyone" would have actually meant, well, everyone. However, it took much longer for the civil rights movement to develop and to be taken seriously. Today is the day we observe Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday in the US.
