Bling Up

Tonight is the opening reception for Art Decathlon, a four artist, ten medium exhibit @ DCAC. The show runs from Jan. 13th until Feb. 5th with an artist talk on Sun., Jan. 29 @ 5pm.  It's already received some local ink from the WaPo.  I've been working on my ten pieces (it's really a decathlon!) off and on for the past six months.  Prior to this, I was spending a lot of time thinking about my work, the direction of my process (the concept is number one: based on perception and media encouraged expectations and the medium is second: usually photography oriented), and not feeling great about the horizons that lay ahead creatively.  I decided I wanted to be a different kind of artist.  It was time for a change.  Having to create ten works in ten different mediums (video, audio, painting, print, drawing, photography, sculpture, conceptual, fiber, and collage) drove this idea home.  This exhibition will be the last one using my old processes and concepts.  I have already started down the new path, one that involves photographs being transformed into intricate line paintings based on the formation of memories.  This work touches on ideas I was investigating five years ago.  Much to my chagrin, I did not see the potential of these ideas back then.  But I realize that in the time since  that I was provided with the experience I needed to recognize it now.  Something Yoda-esqe, ready I was not.  It's all good. Surely someone has said this already but here it is, "regret is for suckers".
